Volvo smart cockpit experience deisgn -
Design a trustworthy relationship between Volvo owner and Volvo Car
Project Intro
This is a design challenge for Volvo. In this project, I applied Speculative Design and the Future Cone framework to explore possible futures for Volvo.
How might VOLVO embrace AI to improve smart cockpit experience in 3 years?
How should we design Volvo smart cockpits for three years later?
How should we design Volvo smart cockpits for three years later? - For this time, we will focus on ‘Present’ & ‘Near Futures’.
“The future is already here —
it’s just not very evenly distributed.”
William Gibson
Discovery
Let’s explore the key signals that may shape the present and near future.
PRESENT RESEARCH - Signals prioritization
With the key signals from the present and near future in hand, the next step was to prioritize them to guide my exploration.
3 key questions during prioritization
What is the certainty that this trend/emerging issue will continue to evolve?
What are the impact for us of the continued development of this trend/emerging issues?
Is there innovation space in this signal for the future of the world?
The drivers with the greatest impact and highest degree of certainty are the ones to unfold distinct and meaningful future world.
Based on the trends and issues, we can anticipate that in 3-5 years, Chinese customers will be eager to embrace safe AI technologies, with family shared travel scenarios becoming an important user scenario.

HERO CONCEPT
POC validation
[ A flick of the finger, enjoy intelligent driving. ]
With a simple point outside, the smart cockpit identifies the indicated landmark. Without any complex operations or interruptions to the drive, the user can effortlessly learn about the landmark and directly navigate to it.
Avoid distracting the driver,
ensuring a safer and smoother driving experience while enhancing passenger enjoyable interaction.
User Scenario
I used a storyboard to describe how a Volvo owner(Chris) and his family (Wife Johanna & Daughter Lisa) use Point & Go together.
Point & Go
Smart Recognition
The user simply points to an outside landmark and gives a command. The Volvo smart cockpit will identify the specific passenger and, using millimeter-wave radar, will locate the user's gesture both internally and externally, determining the target location, such as a building on the street.
Seamless navigation integration
After confirming the location, the system quickly provides the user with the necessary information via voice and guides them to the destination, saving time and reducing hassle.
POC validation
[ Harmonize Your Drive, Elevate Your Well-being]
In-car health monitoring and automatic environment adjustment. The system monitors the driver's health data (such as heart rate and stress levels) and automatically adjusts the cabin's temperature, lighting, and air quality.
Enhancing the driver's comfort and focus.
Improving the health experience for drivers and passengers.
Wellness Sync
Health level monitoring
Volvo can utilize a connected smartwatch or in-car fatigue-detection cameras to monitor the driver's condition, adjusting the lighting and providing alerts accordingly.
POC validation
[Anticipate the Road, Drive with Confidence ]
Our ADAS maintains transparency, ensuring that the driver is fully aware of the current driving mode and the Volvo car behavior.
Providing a safer auto driving experience,
Ensuring the driver always feels confident and secure.
